Water reserves and management of the fish stock

Without a doubt the dominating element of the valleys of S. Antonio is the water. The rivers are abounding in sparkling water and the torrents are said to be the most beautiful ones of the Lombardy. They were spared water regulation and straightening and therefore kept their pristine naturalness. The outstanding conditions for the fish stock permit a graduate diminishing of foreign species introduced because of the fishing in favour of the old and well-established  ones like trout (Salmo trutta) and European bullhead (Cottus gobio) which are able to maintain the own cycle of reproduction.
The two predominating currents of water (Campovecchio and Brandet) uniting in the valley of Sant’ Antonio down the river - near the village of the same name (at 1110 m above sea level) – give some extraordinary quantitative and qualitative characteristics to the region. Exceptional merits and unparalleled peculiarities are of an outstanding scientific value and justify the foundation of the nature reserve in 1983. The aim is and will remain the preservation of that exceptional landscape.
Inside the nature reserve fishing is permitted but it is limited to the opening times, from spring to the beginning of October. One has to pay a charge to the community of Corteno Golgi which administrates the fishery of the whole territory in the community. Fishing can be practiced in different ways, depending on the local conditions (pay attention to the rules written down in legislation and also to the information boards which you can find in the area). Over and above the extremely various, spectacular esthetic and visual value of the landscape, the special qualities of the area are bound to the quality of the water which is verified by the presence of important indicator species.
